Immigrant related Frequently Asked Questions
I lost my green card. I applied for a new green card. I
have not received it yet. Now I have to travel to my country.
What do I do?
Procedures
after submission of application
After the I-90 is submitted to the local office, it is sent
to the appropriate regional Service Center, which sends the
alien a receipt for the application. It is taking about 6
months for the regional Service Centers to process these applications.
If an alien has lost their card, or it has been stolen, the
district office should automatically give the alien an I-551
stamp in their passport. If the replacement card is not ready
in time for the alien to travel or gain work authorization,
they must follow the procedures set out below to obtain temporary
evidence of PR.
Temporary Evidence of Permanent Residence
Temporary evidence of permanent residence will be given to
the alien at the time he or she is required to personally
appear at the Service Center. This temporary evidence is usually
in the form of a stamp in the passport of the alien. This
evidence can be used for travel reentry purposes and as a
work authorization document, and is normally valid for six
months from the date of its issuance. The stamp may also be
placed on the I-94, and if this is the case, two extra photographs
shall be required to be submitted.
